Phased Array Ultrasonic testing

Phased Array testing is a Method for inspecting a component includes exiting a number of transducers forming an array to produce an ultrasonic transmission beam focused into the component. Portable instrument usualy have 16 or 32 parallel elements. The array and the component are separated by a standoff. Signals are generated using the transducers, and the echo signals are processed in a number of channels. The processing includes both dynamical focus and providing a dynamic aperture on receive, both of which compensate for refraction of the beam at the component / standoff interface.

Phased array holds the promise of being able to efficiently detect all significant flaws by combining many angles and focus depths into one probe and image the resulting reflections in an understandable way.
